Clean and green Bolton
A cleaner and greener Bolton is key to making our local areas more attractive. Big improvements in cleanliness have already been made, recycling is on the increase and parks are being improved.
But environmental challenges do not end there. Pollution and climate change may have global impacts, but some of the solutions are local. Here we commit Bolton to make better use of resources, ensuring that development now does not jeopardise current and future generations.

We will:
make public spaces cleaner
Dirty places encourage vandalism, graffiti and anti-social behaviour - creating a spiral of decline. By us all playing our part in creating cleaner spaces we will create safer and more attractive communities where people want to live. We will:
- increase the number of local people who are satisfied with levels of cleanliness from 70% in 2006/2007 to 75% in 2010, and have maintained a presence in the top 25% of all boroughs between 2012 and 2017.
improve parks and open spaces
Safe, clean and well maintained parks and open spaces encourage more people to get out and about, lead healthier lives and help to cut the fear of crime. We will:
- increase the number of local people who are satisfied with local parks and open spaces from 67% in 2006/2007 to 75% by 2010, 78% by 2012 and have maintained a presence in the top 25% of all boroughs by 2017.
live within environmental limits
As Bolton is transformed, we will always look to live within our environmental limits, using resources like land, energy, water, transport networks and utilities more effectively - reducing waste and boosting recycling. We will:
- reduce Bolton’s greenhouse gas emissions (compared with 1,797 kilo tonnes in 2004/2005) by 10% in 2010, 15% in 2012 and 26% by 2017.
